One day in May 1889, Van Gogh spotted a large moth in the asylum garden. He described it to Theo as a death’s-head moth. In fact, it was an emperor moth, whose large, eye-like wing spots are designed to frighten off birds. He explained that painting it from life would have meant killing it, and that the creature was far too beautiful for that.
Here, it rests on broad arum leaves, painted in shades of green ranging from bottle green to almost grey. A few red berries add a touch of colour above. The scene has the feel of a naturalist’s notebook, kept by someone with a painter’s eye.
We can picture it in a bathroom or hallway, or alongside a group of botanical prints in a British home. The poster comes in several sizes. Discover more of his garden studies in our Van Gogh nature and flower prints, and read the story of the asylum garden at Saint-Rémy in our journal.
