Weighty, shadowy and faintly foreboding. We mean that as praise.

Seen from below, a huge, box-like building looms towards you. Its walls have a coarse, almost natural texture, crossed by long horizontal openings like narrow slits. A second tower rises on the right, equally dark. Overhead, clouds gather in a pale sky.

Here, brutalism takes on a theatrical edge. Strong contrast leaves the concrete almost black, while the sky appears to shine beside it. You can almost feel the wind.

Give it space in a room that suits a little drama: a dark sitting room, a home cinema or an office with deep-toned walls, whether in a London flat or a country home. It comes in several sizes and pairs well with a black or metal frame.

Our brutalist architecture wall art collection also includes brighter, more open buildings if you’d like a gentler counterpoint. To discover how these fortress-like structures came about, read our article on brutalism’s rise, fall and return.
