Deep in the garden, a curtain of willow branches falls almost to the water. Behind it, a few shafts of yellow light break through the dark greens, and at the bottom of the picture the pond reflects everything, with a scattering of lily pads and red flowers floating on its surface.
Monet painted this corner of his water garden at Giverny at the end of the First World War, when he was nearly eighty and his eyesight was failing. The brushstrokes are long and loose, the colours dense, and the subject is less the pond itself than the feeling of being inside it, surrounded by green.
Its tall format and deep tones work beautifully in a hallway, a dark-walled bedroom or a reading corner. Our Claude Monet posters include many views of the pond, from the calm 1899 bridge to the late, wilder canvases. Read our article on his last years at Giverny.
