In 1913, Klimt took an unusual trip: he spent his summer holiday in Italy rather than Austria. Staying on Lake Garda, he looked across the water and painted Cassone, capturing its church and houses climbing the hillside.
The scene is compressed into a series of shapes. Walls, roofs and windows form small blocks of grey, cream and terracotta, fitted together like a puzzle, while dark cypress trees rise through them like exclamation marks. A band of water at the bottom anchors the composition. The square format, which Klimt used for most of his landscapes, gives the village an almost tapestry-like quality.
