Here’s Van Gogh experimenting with a new approach. In spring 1887, in Paris, he had recently encountered the dotted technique used by Seurat and Signac, and began trying it on all sorts of subjects, including this tabletop.
A tall glass carafe catches the light. A white dish in the foreground holds lemons and a few oranges. The tablecloth is deep green, while a patterned cloth behind it is painted in small strokes of pink, orange and blue. Though the background is full of detail, the picture feels balanced, thanks to the simple, clearly defined shapes of the glass and fruit.
It would sit comfortably in a kitchen or dining room with a gently retro feel, from a London flat to a country home. There’s plenty of colour, without anything too bold. The poster is available in several sizes. Browse our Van Gogh still-life and fruit prints for pieces to pair with it, and read how his years in Paris reshaped his palette in our article.
