Seen from a high window, a Paris boulevard in winter: bare trees, grey façades, and a crowd of tiny figures painted with single dark strokes. Carriages move down the middle, and on the right a man leans out of a balcony to watch, as we do. A few pink balloons float above the crowd.
Monet painted the scene from 35 boulevard des Capucines, the studio of the photographer Nadar, where the first Impressionist exhibition opened in April 1874. One critic mocked the people as "black tongue-lickings". Today the picture looks like a snapshot of modern life, decades before cinema.
Its cool greys and urban energy suit an office, a hallway or a city apartment. It is the only Paris boulevard in our Claude Monet prints and posters, alongside the Gare Saint-Lazare and the Rue Montorgueil. For his Paris years, read our article on Monet's life.
