Pine trees with long, snaking trunks fill the foreground, their branches crossing like a net. Through the gaps you see the old town of Bordighera piled up on its hill, its pale houses and church tower, and behind it a band of deep Mediterranean blue.
Monet arrived on the Italian Riviera in January 1884 for a short trip and stayed until April. Used to the soft greys of the Channel, he had to invent a new palette: intense blues, emerald greens, pinks. This canvas, now in the Art Institute of Chicago, shows how much fun he had doing it.
It brings holiday light to a living room, a study or a bathroom. Our Monet posters include other Riviera scenes painted the same winter, and the story of his life explains why he kept coming back to the sea. Printed in several sizes, framed or unframed.
