Slim tree trunks, pink, violet and rust, rise from a bright green meadow and cross the whole square like the bars of a screen. Through them, in the distance, a village and the thin spire of a church. A fallen log lies across the grass in the foreground, and the treetops dissolve into a pinkish haze.
Bennecourt faces Giverny on the other side of the Seine, and Monet knew it well: he had already stayed there with Camille in 1868. Painted in 1887, this view treats the trees almost as a pattern, an idea that would lead him to the poplars a few years later.
Its pastel palette is soft enough for a bedroom and graphic enough for a modern living room. It is one of the spring landscapes in our Claude Monet posters, and our article on Monet tells the story of his life on the Seine. Available in several sizes.
