A wicker basket piled high with dark grapes and red and yellow apples, set on a white cloth that slips off the edge of a wooden table. A few pears and loose bunches have rolled out in front. The background is almost black, so the fruit seems to glow.
Monet painted still lifes mostly in difficult times, and the winter of 1879 to 1880 was one of the hardest: his wife Camille had just died and money was short. Fruit pieces sold more easily than landscapes. You would not guess any of that from the canvas, which is all ripeness and generous brushwork.
A natural fit for a kitchen or a dining room with warm wood. More of his still lifes and flowers are gathered in our Monet art prints, and his life during those Vétheuil years is told in our Monet biography. Several sizes, framed or unframed.
