A dozen apples rest on a cloth. At first glance, it seems a simple subject. Look more closely, though, and the background comes alive: short, curved strokes of deep green and blue sweep around the fruit like a current.
Van Gogh painted a series of fruit still lifes in Paris during autumn 1887. He was exploring complementary colours, placing reds against greens to intensify both. Here, the apples seem to glow from within: some are scarlet, others yellow with a rosy cheek, while a few retain a hint of green.
We’d hang this in a kitchen or above a dining-room sideboard, where it feels right at home in a British interior without seeming clichéd. The poster comes in several sizes.
