In January 1890, Theo van Gogh wrote to his brother with some happy news: he and his wife had welcomed a baby boy, Vincent. From the asylum at Saint-Rémy, the painter replied with this canvas, intended to hang above the new parents’ bed.
He chose almond branches because almond trees are among the first to blossom in Provence, often before winter has quite loosened its grip. Their flowers open against a clear turquoise sky. The branches span the canvas, with no horizon in sight, their outlines recalling the Japanese prints he admired.
This may be the most joyful painting he ever created, and it still brings that feeling to a room. It sits naturally in a bedroom, nursery or a UK living room that could do with a little more light. We print it as a poster in a choice of sizes, with or without a frame.
