At midday in the fields, work pauses as the heat sets in. Two farm workers lie down in the shade of a haystack for a nap. The man has pulled his hat over his eyes, while the woman sleeps beside him. Their shoes have been kicked off in the stubble, beside a pair of sickles.
Van Gogh painted The Siesta in January 1890, during a bitter winter in Saint-Rémy, based on a print by Millet. Perhaps that is what makes the scene feel so warm. Golden wheat surrounds the couple, dressed in blue and violet, beneath a deep cobalt sky. In the distance, a cart stands near the haystacks. Of all his works based on Millet, this is probably the best known.
Calm and sunlit, it feels at home in a bedroom, whether in a country cottage or a London flat. We print it as a poster in a choice of sizes. You’ll find more of his rural scenes in our collection of Van Gogh posters, while our article about Van Gogh’s life in France traces those final, productive years.
