Spring 1885, in the Dutch village of Nuenen. Five people sit round a table beneath a single oil lamp, sharing a dish of potatoes while one of them pours black coffee. Van Gogh had spent the whole winter beforehand painting the heads and hands of local peasants, dozens of studies, to get this one picture right.
His aim was to show that these people had "tilled the earth themselves with these hands they are putting in the dish", and had honestly earned their meal. Hence the deliberately earthy colours: greens and browns, which he likened to a really dusty potato, unpeeled. His friend Anthon van Rappard thought it clumsy. Vincent considered it the best thing he had done, and it now hangs in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
We print it as a poster in several sizes, and its warm lamplight suits a dining room or kitchen wall. See how his palette brightened in Paris in our Van Gogh poster collection, or read our article on his years in France.
