Shortly after painting this young peach tree in blossom, in March 1888, Van Gogh heard that Anton Mauve had died. A Hague School painter, Mauve was his cousin by marriage and had given him some of his earliest lessons. Van Gogh inscribed Souvenir de Mauve on the canvas and sent it to the widow.
It’s a tender farewell. The tree stands alone, its slender branches covered in pale pink blossom. The ground is lilac and green, a reed fence borders the right-hand side, and the sky is a soft, pale blue. There’s no heaviness here. Even grief is conveyed through flowers and light.
Its tall, narrow shape makes it easy to hang beside a window, in a hallway or above a bedside table. We print it as a poster in a range of sizes. Pair it with other blossoming trees from our Van Gogh collection, and read about Van Gogh’s first spring in the south of France in our article, with a scene that feels at home in UK interiors.
