In the asylum garden at Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh often painted plants close up, as though he were crouching among the flower beds. Here, he bends towards a rosebush, its foliage dark and thick, its blooms a soft cream touched with pink and green.
Look closely at the flower at the bottom: a tiny green beetle, probably a rose chafer, is perched on it. It’s the sort of detail you spot only after taking your time, just as the painting encourages you to do. The almost black-green background makes the roses appear to glow, while the tall, tightly cropped composition recalls a Japanese hanging scroll.
With its narrow shape and rich greens, this print would sit comfortably in a British hallway, bathroom or bedroom with dark walls. It’s available as a poster in several sizes.
