In late summer 1887, while living in Paris, he painted cut sunflower heads resting on their sides. There’s no vase or table, just the flowers in close-up.

Two large heads stretch across the broad canvas, set against a deep blue background. One faces forwards, its centre packed with seeds; the other is shown from behind, crowned with pointed green sepals. The petals curl and dry at the edges, captured in thick, twisting strokes of yellow and ochre. Rather than a bouquet, it feels like a portrait of a flower nearing the end of its life.

Gauguin admired these Paris sunflower studies so much that he bought two. They still have a bold, unexpected quality today. Their wide format sits well above a sofa or sideboard, including in the living rooms of UK homes. A choice of poster sizes is available.
