One crouches with her back to us, another stands at the centre holding a towel, while the third sits in thought on a lilac cloth. Beyond them, blue sea stretches beneath a scattering of white sailing boats.

Painted in 1907, when Fauvism was at its height, the work’s colours make their mark. The sand is not beige but red and orange, and the figures are picked out in bold, dark strokes. Matisse was not setting out to depict a beach. He wanted to convey the warmth of the day and the bathers’ quiet repose after a swim.

A bathroom may seem the natural spot for this print, though its confident composition would also suit a bedroom or living room, from a London flat to a country home. It is available in several sizes and can be framed.
