Gachet was a doctor, a keen amateur painter and a friend to several Impressionists. They soon struck up a good rapport.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eVan Gogh portrayed him with his head resting on one hand and his elbow on a red table. He wears a dark blue coat, set against rolling blue hills and sky. A white cap, a wistful expression and a sprig of foxglove in his hand, a plant then used in medicine. Van Gogh wrote that he hoped to capture \u003cem\u003ethe heartbroken expression of our time\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe painted two versions, one of which went on to become, for a time, the most expensive painting ever sold at auction.
