Their trunks are cut back every few years, prompting a crown of slender, broom-like branches to grow. Van Gogh sketched and painted them repeatedly while living with his parents in Nuenen in 1884.

In this scene, a line of willows follows a path in late autumn or winter. Bare and gnarled, their shapes have a slightly amusing quality. A faint sun shows through a pale grey-white sky, while browns, greys and muted greens set the tone. This is Van Gogh before his use of colour took off: still finding his way, yet already alert to the character of trees, which he approached almost as if they were people.

Understated and graphic, the print sits surprisingly well against neutral walls in contemporary interiors, from a London flat to a country home. It also makes a thoughtful contrast alongside his later work in a gallery wall. Choose from a range of poster sizes.
